What’s going on at Wuchang?
Soulslikes, by definition, copy stuff from Dark Souls. After all, they even have it in their name: “Souls-like” – “Like Souls”. And if you think about it, there are really few other genres that openly claim their inspiration. The entire shooter era of the late 2000s could have been called CoD-likes, but of course no publisher would voluntarily risk a surrender of their own creativity. Early Soulslikes like Lords of the Fallen, Hollow Knight, Nioh or Salt and Sanctuary made no secret of their inspirations at all. Sometimes the gloomy atmosphere, sometimes the harshness, the losing of souls or the merciless combat system, in which every blow is a serious decision that can’t be taken back, were adopted. Fans never had a problem with this, on the contrary: the hunger for more of that unique Dark Souls feeling was huge. But Wuchang seems to be in a different league. You can click through the 18 minutes of gameplay yourself – apart from the main character’s high heels, every ounce of this game seems copied from Dark Souls, Sekiro and Bloodborne. I’m only going to list the less obvious parallels now, we don’t even need to start with the level, enemy and environment design, you can see that for yourself:
- The entire quick menu corresponds one-to-one to that of a Dark Souls.
- Like in Bloodborne, you can slow down enemies with your pistol while attacking. Even the sound effect is the same.
- When bosses buff, they emit the same scream and blood red aura as in Bloodborne.
- If you tip a healing potion, your character briefly glows the same golden orange as in Dark Souls.
- Items appear as small blue flames on the ground.
- The rear attack looks like a direct copy of Sekiro in sound design, brutality and execution.
- The enemies’ life bars glow in the same red as in Bloodborne and co.
These similarities create a lot of headwind. The trailer presented on IGN’s YouTube channel stands at a controversial ratio of 10,000 likes to 6,000 dislikes, and it looks even worse on Wuchang’s official channel with a ratio of 3,000 thumbs down to 1,000 thumbs up. That’s by no means the shitstorm level of a Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, but the most prominent comments are a warning sign after all:
Fake
and howl about fake. Feel free to form your own opinions. On the one hand, an 18-minute trailer is not a whole game, who knows what will become of the project in the end. On the other hand, there have been more successful attempts to give Soulslikes its own identity. What I find exciting, however, is the great rejection of Wuchang. Because that’s new.
Is the Souls market gradually becoming saturated?
The Soulslike subgenre is, if anything, ten years old and counts maybe 15 to 20 games that have managed to gain halfway popularity. Or in other words: More Souls was primarily good for a long time because there were so few. I can speak for myself there: I love Bloodborne and wish with all my heart that more games would somehow pick up this unique Victorian Gothic horror Lovecraft style. From Software itself is focusing on Elden Ring for now. More Bloodbornelikes would be right up my alley! But in recent months, YouTube has been washing up more and more Soulslikes that primarily sell more, more, more Souls. Bleak Faith, for example: 11:09 Bleak Faith – Forsaken – New trailer for the dark Soulslike shows fresh gameplay Or Project Relic:
1:30 Project Relic: New Dark Souls alternative unveiled at gamescom 2021 Or Black Myth: Wu Kong:
12:44 Black Myth: Wukong – Over 12 minutes of gameplay shows switch to Unreal Engine 5 Even the 2D realm of Soulslikes now features many free riders that look like a Blasphemous. So far, the response to these new Dark Souls ancestors has been positive across the board. So it’s no wonder that more and more of them are being developed – but that’s precisely why I wonder if the market is gradually approaching a saturation level. Whether Wuchang is just more than an extremely obvious clone. Maybe it marks a bit of a turning point. Soulslikes have always had to be good games in the first place, of course, but it may still become increasingly difficult to score points with the classic Souls virtues alone in the future. Even if they are well made. What do you think?

This is how the game sales figures are generated in Germany
Usually, game manufacturers at best announce worldwide sales figures for their games – rather rarely or not at all for individual markets and countries. The data from market researcher GfK, which collects the figures on an ongoing basis on behalf of the Game Industry Association, therefore provides at least a sense of the magnitudes in Germany. This in turn results in the so-called ‘Sales Awards’ in gold, for which at least 100,000 games must be sold in the first twelve months. Further levels: 200,000 (platinum) and 500,000 (special award). The GamesWirtschaft evaluation shows that exclusive titles from Sony Interactive (PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5) and Nintendo (Switch) in particular are extraordinarily successful. Games from third-party manufacturers – such as Electronic Arts, Bethesda, Ubisoft, Activision, Capcom or Square Enix – are usually released at least for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, PC and in rare cases also for Nintendo Switch.

Archive Update May 16, 2022: Crazy success for TT Games and Warner Bros: within just three weeks, has become LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga sold more than 200,000 copies in Germany. And also Elden Ring was, is and remains a bestseller: Bandai Namco Entertainment and From Software have sold more than half a million copies since the end of February – by far the most successful new release of 2022. In total, there are three new entries, which are marked in the list below. Update as of April 14, 2022: In the period from the day of release (March 4) to the end of March, 200,000 motorsport fans signed up for Sony’s racing simulation Gran Turismo 7 opted for. The game is available for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. This makes the title one of the top titles alongside Elden Ring and Horizon: Forbidden West among the most successful video game novelties Rockstar’s game collection Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition has sold more than 100,000 copies in Germany since November 2021. Update March 17, 2022: Within a few days, both. Horizon: Forbidden West (Feb. 18) and the action role-playing game Elden Ring (2/25) from Bandai Namco Entertainment have both surpassed the 200,000 copies sold mark in Germany. The new additions are marked in the list below. Update Feb. 17, 2022: No less than three Nintendo new releases for the Switch have surpassed relevant sales marks by the end of January:
- Mario Party Superstars (500,000+ units)
- Pokémon Legends, which was only released on Jan. 28. Pokémon Legends: Arceus (200,000+ units)
- Big Brain Academy: Head to Head (100,000+ units)
Of note is the continued success of the co-op adventure It Takes Twowhich has sold 5 million copies worldwide – including 200,000 games in Germany. This is because the surprise hit, produced by Swedish indie studio Hazelight Studios and distributed by Electronic Arts, can only be mastered in pairs – the title is unplayable for pure solo players. Update, January 17, 2022: The Swiss-developed Farming Simulator 22 is one of only three games released in 2021 to have sold more than half a million copies in Germany by the end of the year, according to industry association Game’s count. The other two titles: FIFA 22 (Electronic Arts) and Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury (Nintendo). Also new in the overview of best-selling computer and console games (see below): Pokémon Shining Pearl and Metroid Dread (both Nintendo), Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy (Square Enix) and the Ubisoft dance game Just Dance 2022. Update December 22, 2021: Five days after the regular sales report, the industry association files the entry for Call of Duy: Vanguard Replenish. According to the report, Activision Blizzard’s action game, which is available for PlayStation, Xbox and PC, found more than 200,000 buyers between November 5 and 30. The actual sales figures should be much higher by now: Because the next sales award is only unlocked again from 500,000 units, which is the predecessor Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War achieved in February 2020. The game finished the 2020 overall sales charts in 5th place. Update December 17, 2021: Even more interesting than what’s in the industry association’s latest sales report is what’s not it says: Because although the Activision shooter Call of Duty Vanguard was launched on November 5, the blockbuster obviously did not sell 100,000 units in Germany by the end of the month. That is the criterion for the “Sales Award” in gold. The situation is different at Electronic Arts: For the direct competitor Battlefield 2042 at least 200,000 units are reported, as well as for a number of other novelties such as the indestructible Farming Simulator 2022 (Giants Software), Mario Party Superstars, Pokémon Radiant Diamond (both Nintendo) and Capcom’s Resident Evil Village. That the Xbox exclusive title Forza Horizon 5 is not listed, presumably because the racing game is already included in Xbox Game Pass. The net player numbers are therefore likely to be much higher than the sales figures for downloads and physical games. Update from November 17, 2021: As expected FIFA 22 continues its winning streak – literally: Within one month, Electronic Arts has sold at least 500,000 copies of the soccer simulation in Germany. It is to be expected that, analogous to the predecessor, the one million unit mark will already be exceeded in November. As of now, the most successful new releases of the year must also include Ubisoft’s Far Cry 6 must also be counted. According to measurements by the industry association, more than 200,000 PC and console owners have opted for the USK-18 first-person shooter. The complete overview of the best-selling computer and console games of the 2020/21 season can be found below. Update from September 20, 2021: The faltering PlayStation 5 supply is now affecting demand for PS5 exclusive games: The Sony blockbuster, available since June. Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart which has been available since June, failed to break the 200,000-unit mark in Germany by the end of August. From Demon’s Souls (November) and Returnal (April) sold fewer than 100,000 games each. The only new addition in August 2021: the Nintendo Switch photo safari. New Pokémon Snap, which has been on the market since the end of April. Update August 16, 2021: The June 11 release of. Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is the first PlayStation 5-exclusive game to sell more than 100,000 copies in Germany – which, conversely, means that this is on Demon’s Souls and Returnal so far. At the same time, Californian studio Insomniac Games manages to sell more than 100,000 copies within a few months after Spider-Man: Miles Morales the next PlayStation bestseller. Worldwide Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart has sold more than 1.1 million copies. That means that around one in ten of the more than 10 million PS5 owners has bought the action game. Other new entries:
- Like its predecessors F1 2021 also makes it into the best list: It is the first edition of the Formula 1 game after the acquisition of Codemasters by Electronic Arts.
- Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD is now the 22nd Switch title from Nintendo, which has found more than 100,000 buyers in Germany alone since the console went on sale. No other platform has such a high density of console-exclusive bestsellers.
Update as of July 19, 2021: With FIFA 21 manufacturer Electronic Arts has managed to sell more than two million units in Germany within a year of its release. While FIFA 19 and FIFA 20 each reported a maximum of 1.5 million units, the record has now been broken. This is in line with GfK’s half-yearly figures: According to this FIFA 21 the second best-selling PC and computer game nationwide between January and June 2021, behind Super Mario 3D World & Bowser’s Fury. Second new entry: the Switch game released in September 2020. Super Mario 3D All-Stars from Nintendo has found more than half a million buyers since it went on sale. Update June 14, 2021: Even away from Call of Duty Activision also regularly manages to sell bestsellers: Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2 has sold more than 200,000 copies since September 2020, according to GfK Entertainment’s calculations. Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time has sold 100,000 copies since going on sale in October 2020. Capcom reached six-digit figures much faster: Resident Evil 8: Village took just a few days at the beginning of May to win over a six-figure number of PC, PS4, PS5 and Xbox owners. Developed in Dortmund, Germany, by Z-Software and marketed by Aerosoft, the Highway Patrol Simulator 2 has been on the market for PC since 2017 – but the console versions did not follow until 2020. In total, the simulation has found 100,000 buyers. Update from 25.5.2021: Square Enix sold more than 100,000 copies of the action game Outriders within a few days. Outriders was already known ahead of time. The game is available for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X / S, Xbox One, PC and Google Stadia. It has taken incomparably longer in the case of SnowRunner the off-road adventure has already been on the market since the end of April 2020 and has found a six-digit number of buyers in just under twelve months. Update as of 4/22/2021: Within a few days of its release on April 1, the Square-Enix action game Outriders has sold more than 100,000 copies, the industry association Game announced today via Twitter. Update 4/2021: Ubisoft’s dance game Just Dance is and remains a long-running hit: Just like its predecessor, Just Dance Just Dance 2021 has found more than 200,000 buyers in Germany. The same applies to the Switch exclusive title Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Furywhich was only launched on the market in February. This makes Nintendo the first game of the 2021 season to achieve this feat. Also off to an extremely successful start is another Switch novelty: Capcom’s Monster Hunter Rise sold 100,000 copies within a few days. Update 3/17/2021: For the first time since ANNO 1800 in April 2019, a studio from the German-speaking region has once again managed to sell more than 100,000 copies of a PC or console game in Germany: Vienna-based THQ Nordic subsidiary Purple Lamp Studios reports this sales figure for the action-adventure SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom – Rehydrated. The game is released in June 2020 for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC and Stadia. This is according to the latest GfK figures commissioned by the Game industry association. As in previous years, it has also Activision with the latest Call of Duty-As in previous years, Activision has also managed to break the 500,000 mark with the latest Call of Duty: Black Ops: One: Since November, half a million PC, Xbox, PS4 or PS5 owners have bought the first-person shooter Call of Duty: Black Ops – Cold War has been chosen by half a million PC, Xbox, PS5 and PS5 owners since November. Nintendo also remains on track for success, having sold more than 100,000 copies since February of Switch exclusive title Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury sold. Update 2/11/2021: Analog to FIFA 20 there has also been FIFA 21 took only four months to sell more than 1.5 million units in Germany. The Switch board game collection 51 Wordwide Games has found more than 200,000 buyers since June 2020. With Immortals Fenyx Rising Ubisoft has cracked the mark of 100,000 copies – the action adventure is also available for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X / S. All new additions as of January 31, 2021 are marked accordingly in the list below. Update from 18.1.2021: With Animal Crossing: New Horizons is the first Switch title to sell more than one million units in Germany in the first few months after release. An even more massive debut was recorded by Cyberpunk 2077: In the three weeks between Dec. 10, 2020 and Dec. 31, 2020, at least 500,000 copies were sold in this country. The new arrivals at a glance:
- 1 million copies sold: Animal Crossing: New Horizons
- 500,000 copies sold: Cyberpunk 2077, The Last of Us Part 2, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla
- 200,000 copies sold: Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales
- 100,000 copies sold: 51 Wordwide Games, Hyrule Warriors: Time of Devastation, Just Dance 2021
Update 12/15/2021: With the new additions Assassin’s Creed Valhalla and Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War are the first games in the bestseller list that were also developed specifically for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. Both action games are rated 18+ and have each sold more than 200,000 copies in Germany (download and disc) in just two weeks.
