Brief description

This advanced course is aimed at developers who want to implement services/web services and distributed systems with .NET. On the first two days REST HTTP services with ASP.NET WebAPI will be discussed and on the third day Windows Communication Foundation (WCF) and Google RPC (gRPC) will be covered as an alternative.

Target audience

Software developers who want to develop multi-tier/service-oriented applications or REST or SOAP-based web services using .NET Core or .NET Framework on client and/or server. This course requires a good knowledge of syntax in C# and how to use Visual Studio, which you are welcome to learn through our .NET Basic Seminar. The course covers the latest product version .NET 6.0/7.0 with C# 10.0/11.0 as well as Visual Studio 2022.

Outline

Day 1: REST Services / HTTP Services with the ASP.NET Web API.

  • Concepts: Distributed Systems, SOA, and Microservices.
  • Techniques in .NET and .NET Core
  • WebAPI in .NET Framework (ASP.NET) vs. .NET Core (ASP.NET Core)
  • Creating REST services with Web API
  • Data formats
  • Parameter passing
  • Control over HTTP messages
  • Hosting REST services with ASP.NET Web API

Day 2:

  • Extending Web API
  • Security with Web API (SSL, HTTP-Auth, Oauth)
  • Custom Authentication Types
  • ASP.NET SignalR

Day 3: Google RPC

  • Creation of a server
  • Creation of a client

Windows Communication Foundation (WCF)

  • Creating a server (only possible with .NET Framework!)
  • Creation of a client

 

Methodology

This is an interactive online live course with instructor and a maximum of 10 participants. Theory with slides and demonstrations of the instructor alternate with task-guided practical exercises of the participants, which the instructor accompanies.

Each participant receives: 1. access to the virtual classroom with download of the training presentation (as PDF) and the code examples covered in the course. 2. a certificate of attendance (as PDF) signed by Dr. Holger Schwichtenberg.
