Installing A Plug Outlet

The times when switches and sockets were installed in the standard ivory-colored design and only knew the functions “on” and “off” are over. Modern switches and sockets not only have more to offer in terms of shape and color, but also in terms of safety and convenience. As a result, they come in different designs, which we present in this article. In addition, we explain how to install a switch and a socket yourself. In doing so caution is advised, however, because working on electrical connections involves great risks for people unfamiliar with the subject.

Notes before installation

Working on electrical connections is always associated with a high health risk. For this reason, do-it-yourselfers should follow these safety instructions and, if in doubt, consult an electrician. Before installing the outlet, always turn off the power and tape the fuse, such as with an adhesive strip, to prevent accidental activation by another person. Then use a voltmeter to check that the check that the line is voltage-free. Now carry out a counter test on another socket to ensure that the device is working properly and that there is indeed no voltage on the first connection. Only then should the outlet or switch be installed within the installation zones.

Instructions: connect the socket and switch

After the safety precautions the socket can be connected: First, you loosen the screw from the center thread of the socket and pull out the cover. In the process, the frame also comes off automatically. Then the two spreading claw screws are unscrewed, so that the socket insert can be pulled out. After that, the live conductor, the protective conductor and the neutral conductor are disconnected. Connect the live outer conductor and the neutral conductor to the terminals of the adjacent contact sockets. The green-yellow protective conductor belongs to the middle terminal. The two outer screws are used to fix the spreading claws. The wire end is pushed to the left of the screw shaft under the screw head so that it does not come loose when the screw is that it does not slide out when the screw is tightened. By connecting the individual terminals to each other, it is also possible to connect two or three sockets to each other. two or three sockets can be connected to each other. Now press the insert into the socket and tighten the two side screws so that the expansion claws are pressed apart in the panel box.

Attention. The mounting claw of the plug insert must not touch or even damage any or even damage them. Expansion claws do not hold in cavity wall boxes. In this case, the switch insert is fastened in the cavity wall boxes on the right and left through the oblong holes on the side using the device screws.

Then the switch insert is in this sequence:

  1. First the frame and then the cover is placed on the socket insert.
  2. The center screw is tightened.
  3. Finally, after turning on the power, check the functionality with the phase tester.

Also the switch inserts are also fastened with expanding claws – in the case of cavity sockets with device screws. Then proceed in the sequence shown here:

  1. Hold the frame over the insert
  2. press in the intermediate piece and snap in the rocker.

In addition, all commercially available socket outlets can be fitted with as well as night and orientation lights can be attached to all commercially available can be attached.

Surface-mounted and flush-mounted socket

Socket strips only replace missing sockets to a limited extent. Whether a surface-mounted or flush-mounted socket outlet is installed depends on the location and the desired function function: While surface-mounted sockets are usually installed in workshops, basements and hobby rooms, flush-mounted sockets are used in living areas. These can be expanded, reconfigured and even uninstalled without the need for chiseling or plastering. The number of flush-mounted sockets in a room can be expanded without wall work only with multiple plugs. However, these have now evolved from an emergency solution to a safe option for equipping a room with more connections. The prerequisite for these electrical connections is always a professionally laid power supply line and careful installation. Indoors, wiring and flush-mounted sockets are usually already in place, so occupants only need to decide on the sockets they want. These are available in many designs and in different models, for example, with a power switch, as a radio-controlled socket with remote control or even lockable.

Special sockets

Sockets for damp rooms

In damp rooms, such as the kitchen and bathroom, are usually so-called damp room sockets integrated. These have a safety cover that keeps moisture out. They are available in various colors and designs and can be easily integrated into the room design. Socket outlet top with power switch

Safety sockets for hobby cellars

Likewise, there are special models that are used wherever do-it-yourselfers regularly work, e.g. in hobby cellars, summerhouses and garden sheds. In contrast to the damp room sockets, their design is kept simple. They are available as single and multiple sockets with and without power switch, safety cover and with child safety lock.

Sockets with power switch for electrical appliances

Devices continue to consume electricity in standby mode, although they are not used. TV, receiver, DSL modem and PC monitor consume a considerable amount of passive power over the course of the year. consumption in the household in the household. But that doesn’t have to be the case! Here, sockets with switches provide a remedy. While switchable multiple plugs are well known, the switchable flush-mounted socket is rather rare in this country.devices without a power switch can be switched off completely with a switch socket.

Multiple plugs with overvoltage protection

Multiple plugs have largely lost their status as an unloved makeshift today: Equipped with surge protection, fuses and one or more switches, they can certainly hold their own alongside permanently installed solutions. They are ideal for connecting computer systems, TV and video combinations or stereo systems. they are ideally suited. Moisture-insensitive multiple plugs with one or more covers can also be used outdoors or in damp rooms.
