Use “Where is?” to locate your AirPods, AirPods Pro, or AirPods Max on a map and play a sound to find them faster.
About “Where’s?”
“Where’s?” is the only way to find a lost or missing device. There is no other Apple service that can find, track, or otherwise mark a device. You must set up “Where Is?” on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, which is the device you use with your AirPods. Before you start a search for your AirPods, you should first update the corresponding device: iOS or iPadOS or macOS. You can also search for your AirPods online via the iCloud.com site. For some AirPods models, the online procedure may be different, and some features may not be available. If you “Where’s?” before your AirPods were lost, you won’t be able to find them with “Where’s?”. Learn how to set up “Where Is?” here.
Find your AirPods on a map
If you’ve lost or misplaced your AirPods, you may be able to find them again by using the Where’s It app on your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or Mac where you’re signed in with the same Apple ID. With AirPods Pro (2nd generation), you can also find the charging case on the map if it’s disconnected from your AirPods.
Find your AirPods with the “Where is?” app.
- Open the “Where’s?” app.
- Select the “Devices” tab.
- Select your AirPods. A location or “No location found” will be displayed under each device.
Enable “Where’s?” network
If you enable the “Where Is?” network, you may be able to see the location of your AirPods (3rd generation), AirPods Pro and AirPods Pro (2nd generation), and AirPods Max even if your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch is not connected to a Wi-Fi or cellular network.
- On your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, open the Settings app.
- Select your name and then select “Where is?”.
- Select “Find my [device]”, and then enable “Find my [device]”.
- Enable “Where’s?” network.
Play a sound on AirPods.
When your AirPods are near one of your Apple devices and connected with Bluetooth, you can play a sound to make them easier to find. With AirPods Pro (2nd generation), you can also play a sound to find your charging case.
- Open the “Where is?” app.
- Select the “Devices” tab.
- Select your AirPods from the list.
- Tap “Play sound” to play a sound that gradually gets louder.
Be careful not to wear your AirPods in or on your ears when you play a sound.
Receive notifications when AirPods are left behind.
If you have an iPhone 12 or newer, here’s what you can do: Set up notifications for left-behind devices so you can receive notifications for your AirPods (3rd generation), AirPods Pro, and AirPods Pro (2nd generation). Generation) or AirPods Max accidentally left anywhere.
- Open the “Where is?” app.
- Go to the “Devices” tab and select your AirPods.
- Under “Notifications,” tap “Notify me when left behind.”
- Enable the “Notify me when left behind” option.
Enable Lost Mode for your AirPods.
When you enable Lost mode for your AirPods (3rd generation), AirPods Pro, and AirPods Pro (2nd generation) or AirPods Max, you can share a message with your phone number or email address. When someone finds your AirPods, the message will appear on their iPhone. Activate Lost Mode:
- On your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, open the “Where is?” app.
- Go to the “Devices” tab, and select your AirPods.
- Scroll down to “Mark as lost,” and select “Enable.”
- Follow the on-screen instructions if you want your contact information to appear for the lost AirPods.
- Select “Activate.”
Your AirPods are not connected
If your AirPods are out of range or need charging, you may see Last Known Location, No Location Found, or Offline. You can’t play sound to find them, but you may be able to get directions to where they were last connected. When they’re back online, you’ll get a notification on the iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or Mac you’re using them with.
Replace lost AirPods or a charging case.
Release Date: If your AirPods (all generations), AirPods Pro (1st generation), or AirPods Max are paired with your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, Apple Watch, or Mac, you can use the Where’s It app to locate them if they’re lost. If you want to use the “Where is?” app for AirPods Pro (2nd generation), you need iOS 16, iPadOS 16.1, macOS Ventura or later.
Get the location of your AirPods on a map.
- On iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch: Open the “Where is?” app.
, tap “Devices” and then tap your AirPods.
- On the Apple Watch: With a Wi-Fi or cellular connection active, open the “Find Devices” app
and select your AirPods (watchOS 8.0 or later).
- On Mac: Open the “Where is?” app.
, click “Devices” and select your AirPods.
- On iCloud.com: Open iCloud.com/find and sign in with your Apple ID. First select “All Devices” and then select your AirPods.
If you’re using AirPods Pro (2nd generation), you can see the location of both AirPods and the charging case on a map. For all other models, if the two AirPods are not in the same location, you will only see the location of one AirPod at a time on the map. Find the AirPod you see on the map, put it back in the case, and refresh the map to locate the other AirPod. If your AirPods are paired but offline, the Where Is app shows when and where they were last online. If you’re using AirPods (3rd generation), AirPods Pro (all generations), or AirPods Max, the Where Is app shows their current location for up to 24 hours. After that, the Where’s app shows when and where they were last online. For more information, see Enable “Where’s?” network.
Play sound on AirPods
You can play a sound on AirPods to make it easier to find them when they’re not in their case. If you’re using AirPods Pro (2nd generation), you can also have your charging case play a sound effect. If your AirPods are not in the same place, you can mute one of them by tapping “Left” or “Right”. This way, you can find one at a time.
- On iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch: Open the app “Where is?”
and tap “Devices.” Tap the name of your AirPods and then tap “Play Sound.”
- On the Apple Watch: With a Wi-Fi or cellular connection active, open the “Find Devices” app.
, select your AirPods, and tap “Play Sound” (watchOS 8.0 or later).
- On Mac: Open the app “Where is?”
, select “Devices” and then select your AirPods. Click on
and then click “Play sound”.
- On iCloud.com: Open iCloud.com/find and sign in with your Apple ID. Select “All Devices” and then select your AirPods and click “Play Sound.”
When your AirPods are connected to your device, they will play a sound for a few minutes (or until you stop the sound) to help you find them more easily. If your AirPods are not connected, the sound will play the next time they connect to a Wi-Fi or cellular network. If the Where’s Network is enabled, you can play a sound effect on your AirPods (3rd generation), AirPods Pro (all generations), or AirPods Max even when they’re not connected to your device. Locate one of the AirPods (all generations) or AirPods Pro (1st generation) when they’re not in the same place.
If both AirPods or AirPods Pro are not in the same location, you can search for them one by one.
- On your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch, open the “Where’s?” app.
, tap “Devices” and then tap the name of your AirPods.
- Tap “Play Sound” and mute either AirPod by tapping “Left” or “Right”.
- Locate one of the AirPods using the map (you’ll only see the location of one AirPod at a time) and return it to the charging case.
- Refresh the map to locate the other.
Locate AirPods Pro (2nd generation) or charging case if they are not in the same location.
If you have AirPods Pro (2. Generation), you can see the locations of the AirPods Pro and charging case on a map in the “Where is?” app. see. If you’re nearby, you can also play a sound effect on your AirPods Pro to help you find them.
- On your iPhone or iPad, open the Where’s app, tap Devices, and then tap the name of your AirPods Pro.You can see the location of your AirPods Pro and charging case on the map.
- Select one of the AirPods Pro or the charging case and tap “Play sound”.
Locate AirPods nearby with your iPhone or iPad.
If you’re looking for AirPods (3rd generation), AirPods Pro (all generations), or AirPods Max that are likely to be somewhere nearby, you can use the app “Where’s?” on your iPhone or iPad to find out how far away they are from you. Let’s say you’ve misplaced your AirPods in your home. In that case, the app can guide you to the approximate location of the AirPods. Notice: For AirPods Pro (2nd generation), the “Where is?” app can also guide you to the exact location of your AirPods and charging case.
- Open the Where’s It app on an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch previously paired with your AirPods.
- Tap “Devices” and then tap the name of your AirPods. Tap “Search” and follow the instructions that appear.If you’re using AirPods Pro (2nd generation), you should move around the room to find your AirPods. You may see an arrow pointing in the direction of your AirPods and see the approximate distance, as well as a message if your AirPods are on a different floor.
