Alcohol poisoning: a real emergency
At what point does someone have alcohol poisoning? Doubt can be life-threatening in an emergency. Here’s how to recognize the symptoms and help others. Tipsy, drunk or already seriously alcohol poisoned – it’s often not so easy to tell the difference. However, severe alcohol poisoning can be caused by respiratory arrest or circulatory failure can lead to death. That is why it is important that you know the symptoms and can help others in an emergency. If in doubt, it is better to call an ambulance once too often than once too seldom.
What is alcohol poisoning?
Alcohol is a cytotoxin that the body can only break down in small amounts. Any form of alcohol intoxication is therefore also a more or less severe form of „poisoning“. The effects on the body depend on the blood alcohol concentration (BAC), which is expressed in parts per thousand. Alcohol poisoning can be divided into four stages and recognized by these signs:
Alcohol poisoning: the symptoms
- Stage 1: 0.1-1 per mille
- Inhibitions decrease, the affected person talks a lot, reacts more slowly, speaks more slurred. They feel less pain, have reddened eyes, see worse.
- Stage 2: 1-2 per mille
- Further speech, coordination and visual disorders occur, also confusion and orientation disorders. Affected persons are more easily irritable.
- Stage 3: 2-3 per mille
- Disturbances of balance and concentration, muscle slackening, memory lapses and vomiting. Affected persons are hardly responsive, can become unconscious, are in a state of shock.
- Stage 4: 3-4 per mille
- The last stage is manifested by coma and unresponsive pupils. Circulatory failure may lead to respiratory arrest. Without medical help, this situation can be fatal – also because those affected can choke on vomit.
Caution: Medical assistance may already be necessary at stage 2. If you lose consciousness, you should call an ambulance.
Does alcohol poisoning leave permanent damage?
Alcohol poisoning does not immediately cause permanent damage. Consequential damage, especially with high alcohol consumption over a long period of time, often shows up years later. For example, the risk of developing cancer increases after alcohol poisoning. The general rule is that alcohol poisoning poses a high high health risk If help does not arrive quickly, the condition is life-threatening. That’s why every alcohol poisoning is one too many.
Alcohol poisoning? Here’s how you can help
You are at a party and one of your friends has passed out because of too much alcohol. Your first reaction is to pour cold water on his or her face and shake it to make him or her wake up? Better not! Call an ambulance in any case. This may seem rather violent and exaggerated at first, but alcohol poisoning can be fatal in the worst case if the person is not treated. Important: Do not leave people who are barely responsive alone, on no account alone! The affected persons cannot help themselves. Therefore you are asked to give first aid and call an ambulance.
