Servus guys, just found old protein powder from my brother. The powder has expired for a good 3 years. However, the bag is still sealed. Actually, then nothing can spoil or? If the bag is sealed, no moisture or other things can have come there. Furthermore, I found a can of BCAA’s in powder form. This was opened, however, also expired 3 years but not lumpy or the like. What do you think? Thanks a lot 🙂

A protein powder is a very dry product and thus rather less prone to spoilage. The proteins can lose their structure, but this is not so bad because our body breaks them down into their building blocks anyway, meaning amino acids, to utilize them. Added flavors can evaporate and thus change the taste. Contained fats can become rancid. I see the biggest problem with fats in terms of perishability. Even if they are only contained to a small extent, rancid fat can be quite nasty for the body. If it still tastes normal you can try it, but 3 years is a long time. If in doubt, I wouldn’t use it, especially if it has a relatively high fat content. Forget the expiration date, it has no meaning with such products. For both: just trust your own senses: does the product look discolored, does it smell bad, does it taste abnormal? if yes, better dispose of it, if no – go for the meatballs! Had the same problem a few weeks ago. My protein powder was also expired, but I used it regularly and it still tastes good and I have not noticed anything negative. Try it out and then decide by feel. But I think that nothing can actually go bad, especially with sealed packaging.
