With iOS display controls, you can enlarge your text, bold it, increase contrast, apply color filters, use smart invert, control auto brightness, and more.

If you take advantage of displaying objects against a dark background, you can use Invert Colors to change how content is displayed on your screen. To use Invert Colors, open the Settings app, and then tap Accessibility > Display & Text Size. Activate “Invert – Intelligent” or “Invert – Classic”.

Invert – Intelligent

“Invert – Intelligent” inverts the colors on the display. This excludes images, media, and some apps that use dark color styles.

Invert – Classic

“Invert – Classic” inverts all colors on the display.

Enable “Color Filter”.

If you are color blind or have other vision problems, “Color Filter” helps you distinguish between colors. Color Filter” can be used to change the appearance of images and movies. Therefore, it is recommended to use this feature only when you really need it. Open the Settings app, and then tap Accessibility > Display & Text Size > Color Filters. You’ll see three examples of color spaces that let you choose an option that suits your needs. Swipe left or right in the examples to find a filter that works best for you. This example contains pens of different colors, starting from left to right with red, yellow, and finally purple and brown. This example contains three columns of color depths. This example contains vertical lines on a background with different colors for limited color perception. Select the filter that will display the entire line.

If you activate “Color filters”, there are four preset filters to choose from:

  • Grayscale
  • Red/green filter for protanopia
  • Red/green filter for deuteranopia
  • Blue/yellow filter for tritanopia

Adjust color intensity

Adjust the intensity of a color filter depending on your needs. Use the Intensity slider to adjust a filter to be more or less intense.

“Adjust “Color cast

If you have color or light sensitivity, tap “Color cast” to change the hue of the entire display on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. Use the sliders to adjust the hue of your display and the intensity of the effect.

Other display adjustments

You can also find these adjustments on the Display & Text Size screen:

  • Bold Text: Text is displayed in bold.
  • Larger Text: Tap this option, and then check “Larger dynamic text.” Use the slider to select your preferred reading size.
  • Key shapes: Adds shapes to keys, such as an underline under the back keys.
  • On/Off Labels: Adds on/off labels to settings screens.
  • Flatten Transparency: Improves contrast by reducing transparency and blur on some backgrounds.
  • Increase Contrast: Improves color contrast between the app’s foreground and background colors.
  • Differentiate without colors: Replaces user interface elements that rely solely on color to convey information.
  • Reduce White Point: Reduces the intensity of bright colors.

Limit frame rate.

If you own one of these iPhone or iPad models, you can set the display’s maximum frame rate to 60 frames per second:

  • iPhone 13 Pro
  • iPhone 13 Pro Max
  • iPad Pro (10.5″, 1st generation or later)
  • iPad Pro (11″, 1st generation or newer)
  • iPad Pro 12.9″ (2nd generation) or newer

Here’s how to limit the frame rate:

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Tap “Accessibility” > “Motion.”
  3. Activate “Limit frame rate”.

Enable features with the control assist shortcut or control center.

Release Date: The next Apple smartphone is likely to come a bit later than usual, because according to all the information so far, the iPhone 12 will be unveiled not in September, but in October. What it looks like is already known, there are still many question marks about the specifications. There have already been various leaks about the design of the iPhone 12, and it has been more or less clear for weeks what the Apple device will look like. However, there are still many questions about the technical details. One of them concerns the display: It has been speculated for quite some time that the iPhone 12 could come with a 120 Hz display.

60 Hz limit in the software

There were already first hints, namely an option in an iOS 14 beta to limit the refresh rate to 60 Hz. Such a “limit” for the frames was therefore of interest because the iPhone 11 only has a 60 Hz panel anyway, so a software-side limitation can actually only point to a higher frequency in the successor model, according to Apple experts. Since then, there has been a lot of speculation about whether or which iPhone 12 could have a 120 Hz panel. There were also reports that the two better models could have such a display. Moreover, it was and still is assumed that the screen of the iPhone 12 will theoretically be capable of 120 Hz, but Apple will not activate this feature out of the box for battery-saving reasons.

Panels yes, but no driver ICs.

Now there is new information about this, but it does not make the matter easier or more transparent. That’s because, according to Ross Young, founder and chief executive of Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC), Apple managed to secure enough 120Hz panels for the iPhone 12, but didn’t get enough matching 120Hz driver ICs, or integrated circuits. “So they’re going to have to find a fix, which is going to be difficult, wait for 120Hz driver ICs, and potentially delay the launch significantly or launch at 60Hz. We’re hearing they’re going to launch at 60Hz.”

Adjust brightness in control center

  1. iPhone X or newer or iPad with iOS 12 or iPadOS: Swipe down from the top right corner of the display. iPhone 8 or older: Swipe up from the bottom edge of the display.
  2. Drag the brightness bar up or down to adjust the brightness.

Adjust brightness and color temperature in Settings

  1. In the Settings app, tap “Display & Brightness.”
  2. Move the slider to the right or left to adjust the brightness.

From here, you can activate dark mode, which is easier on your eyes. Dark mode uses a dark color scheme that can be used system-wide. It can also be used in the apps that are integrated into your device, as well as in many third-party apps. True Tone* is enabled by default and uses advanced sensors to adjust the colors and intensity of the display to the ambient light for a more natural-looking image. When you turn off True Tone, the display maintains colors and intensity regardless of changes in ambient light. You can also enable Night Shift. This shifts the colors of the display toward the warmer side of the color spectrum for a more eye-friendly display. Select Settings > Display & Brightness > Night Shift, and use the Color Temperature slider to adjust the color temperature warmer or cooler. Some Display Assist settings, such as Invert Colors, Grayscale, and Increase Contrast, may disable the True Tone display. If Reference Mode is turned on on your iPad, you will not be able to adjust the brightness. True Tone and Night Shift will then be disabled.

About brightness levels

iOS devices use an ambient light sensor to adjust brightness according to the lighting conditions of your environment. The sensor decreases brightness in dark places and increases it in bright places. The Auto-Brightness feature is enabled by default. When Auto-Brightness is enabled, the slider for the brightness of your device moves according to the changing light conditions. Here’s how to turn Auto-Brightness on or off:

  1. In the Settings app, tap “Accessibility”.
  2. Tap “Display & Text Size.”
  3. Scroll to “Auto-Brightness” and tap it to turn the feature on or off.

If you feel that the screen brightness is not adjusting properly, try disabling “Auto-Brightness” and then re-enabling it.

Always-On Display and Auto-Brightness Adjustment on iPhone 14 Pro Models

Always-On Display is enabled by default on iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. The display on your iPhone 14 Pro or iPhone 14 Pro Max can operate at a refresh rate as low as 1 Hz thanks to the new power-saving mode. These models use enhanced technology that dims the display when you lock your device or aren’t using it. To extend battery life, the display goes completely dark in certain situations, such as when you put the phone in your pocket or place it on a surface with the display facing down. Here’s how to disable or enable the always-on display:

  1. In the Settings app, tap “Display & Brightness.”
  2. Scroll down to “Always on” and disable or enable the “Always on” option.
